high gas prices ~~ an unexpected benefit?
-------------------------------------------
Back in the 70's, gas prices soared and interest rates were double digit. Choices had to be made when it came to obtaining gas, heating and cooling homes and even stocking the pantry. Folks have shared with me that community kitchens and co-ops became popular. Women would pool their grocery money to purchase in bulk. Once a week, families would bake and can in the community kitchens. Neighbors looked out for one another, picked up groceries for friends while in town, even car pooling became fashionable.
Well, everything old is new again!

Maybe an unintended benefit of $4 a gallon gas is a stronger, close knit community at alpine. The other day, Leslee stopped in the pro shop to see if anyone needed an item in town. Women have been carpooling to the farmer's market. Neighbors coming in for the weekend offer to bring groceries from Sam's, Costco and Trader Joe's. My good friend Scott stopped at Sin City to bring me a bottle of grenadine.

Who knows what the future holds but maybe our boathouse with its commercial kitchen may become a community kitchen. In the meanwhile, we can all be thankful for our good friends and neighbors who look out for each other.

Not exactly on topic, but the high gas prices may help the Western Maryland and hopefully the AL community seem very attractive as big city folks look for vacation areas that are a reasonable drive from home.
We have friends that visited the Gulf Shores area of Alabama several years ago and fell in love with the area. They have been considering buying a vacation home there. Being a 16 hour drive and gas prices headed north, they now are considering the Deep Creek area because of the hunting and fishing opportunities.
We, of course, think that AL is the best bargain in the area and hope that they settle in our community.
