DIANA-logue ~~ choosing a candidate

----------------------------------------
Its been a while since my last DIANA-logue, so I'm jumping back in with something short & simple...

With 24 hour coverage of elections and every word and gesture of candidates being scrutinized, I've come to a conclusion about the way to choose a candidate. This is not a popularity contest~ it makes no difference what side of the aisle a person hails from AND no matter if the position being filled is national, state, local or even community. CHARACTER COUNTS. I will not hold my nose and simply vote for the lesser evil. The candidate who has a sense of moral clarity and wisdom will get my vote.... be involved this political season and vote your conscience. It is the only way to truly make a difference.

BTW, absentee ballots are available for PO's who are unable to attend the annual meeting. But you MUST request your absentee ballot, they are not sent out automatically. A little flaw with our election process that could be easily changed. While we spend thousands mailing out a newsletter that could be posted online, PO's must call & request an absentee ballot. Maybe that's part of the reason 200 votes out of a possible 1800+ would win a postion on the board.
Also, your absentee ballot must be received by ALPOA days before the annual meeting. So by the time 'meet the candidates night' takes place Friday night before the elections, your vote already has to be in. Guess that's why it seems to be a popularity contest.

Anyway... get to know your candidates NOW!

Very well said. Unfortunately, many elections become "popularity contests".

Moral clarity and character are important traits that should be considered in addition to other factors such as experience & knowledge.

If you get a moment, also check out the blog that Judith Becker has created. We have been reading her statements and find ourselves nodding our heads and also have been very impressed with the ideas, honesty and insight she has. Not knowing too many people at Alpine, this blog created by Diana has been a great source for thought provoking information and Judith's blog great with respect to the future of Alpine and what can be accomplished if we vote for change, open communication and character of our elected representatives. Now that the elections are getting closer it is important for everyone to request a ballot or make an effort to get to the meeting. This blog has been great but it is time to move some of the ideas here and elsewhere into action.

By all means, everyone should be checking Judith Becker's blog. I found the most recent entry by Judith describing a recent encounter a an AL social function to be quite enlightening. If you have a couple of minutes go to Judith's blog and check it out for yourself.

Would it be possible to include specifics as to whom we call for absentee ballots, her phone number, the best time to call, and the info we need to have when we call?

You can also stop in and see her in person.
