trout stocking in the lake ~~ just days away

---------------------------------------
This is a note from Dennis Schiffbauer concerning the stocking of our lake. His note was posted as a comment, but I am also listing it as a seperate article. I think this is important info for property owners.

---------------------------------------

Attention Fisherman- Good News
The lake will be stocked with trout on April 9, 2008. This will be the first trout stocking in many years. The fish will average 1-2 pounds. THE LAKE WILL BE CLOSED TO FISHING FROM April 9 UNTIL April 19, 2008(to allow the fish to disperse and adapt).
There will be fish survey forms, along with copies of rules & regulations, available at the boat house. All fishermen are asked to please fill one out EACH time you fish, and return it to the box provided. The information is vital to us in our efforts to establish a data base, determine the condition of our fishery, it's needs, and to provide the optimal fishing opportunity.
Finally, enjoy launching your boat at our new boat dock. No need to get your feet wet anymore. Questions can be directed to Dennis Schiffbauer, lake committee member at 304-789-6017.

Dennis, thanks for this update and information. All of us who love to fish will look forward to hooking one of these beauties and then returning them to our waters. However, I do have concern about non property owners who fish our lake. What steps can be taken to insure they also follow your procedures?

Thanks for asking! First of all I don't think we should have to worry about John Q.Public. I believe fishing (lake) priviledges should be limited to property owners, their guests, motel guests (with a permit), renters (with a permit) and employees. As far as compliance in filling out forms, or following rules, I plan to draw on my experience as a Deputy Waterways Conservation Officer (fish warden). I plan to spend extra time talking to the fishermen, checking their creel limits, helping to fill out forms, and answering questions they may have about the lake and lake policies.

Just curious, Dennis, how many trout are they scheduled to put into Alpine Lake?

Great news about the trout stocking !!! Thank you Dennis !!

Is this a State of WV. DNR stocking program? Is this something we can do every year ?
I would like to see catch and release promoted until the fish levels get back up to par…

We’ve only been PO’s for about five years and I don’t know much history about the lake… Does any one know the statistics on the lake ? What is the water depth at the deepest end? What is the average water temperature, etc.. ?

    Tks
    Brad

This was a private stocking by Alpine. We received 260 brook trout@ 1# each and about 400 rainbows each well over a pound. As far as the lake- it's 9-15 feet deep with a 30' trough running parallel to number 10 fairway. There are several small runoff streams feeding the lake with a couple of springs coming up in the main body of the lake. The Lake Committee has just recently begun to build a database with frequent monitorings of the water quality, which by the way is very good.I can't give you an exact temperature range-I can tell you it's cold!
There should be pictures of the stocking on the offical Alpine website.

Trout watch: The Buczeks spotted trout swimming happily in the Beaver Pond, and today I saw trout and striped bass doing same in Turtle Pond. Looks like they are nicely acclimated to our lake.

Sunday morning at 9:30. The lake is back open for fishing and there are quite a few folks out having some fun. Even with the overcast skies, I hope the fishing is good!
