Bald Eagle sighting at Alpine

I know, I know... usually when you mention BALD around Alpine, no one is going to get excited. But Judy Hay reported seeing a bald eagle along the lake on the 11th hole of the golf course. This happened on Friday Dec. 21.

Sorry, we don't have any pics of the eagle. If anyone was able to snap one, let us know. We'd all like to take a peek!

Fred and I also saw this eagle, flying around the lake at the dam end last Monday- it flew in a circle and the white head was very visble. Good sign of nature in our midst.

On Dec 31 at 9A.M. I went down to the boathouse to film some ducks. I said to my friend, boy thats a big goose coming in see if you can get his landing. Then I noticed his big white head. It was a bald eagle. He made two attempts at catching a fish and on the 2nd attempt came up with a fish. My friend got a beautiful shot of the eagle skimming the lake. He is going to email me the picture and ill submit it to you. The eagle dove so fast I couldnt get a good shot. The picture we do have is the eagle full spread ,face coming at us, about 2 feet above the water. I cant wait to get my copy.Later the same day without a camera we saw him along side the road near the beach eating a dead animal. he flew as soon as we saw him and we did not have the camera that time.

Bald Eagle siting Friday, Jan 4th! Coming back from the lodge at 4:15 pm, I was looking to the west at a most interesting sky...thought I should find a place to stop and take a photo. Suddenly, I sited the bald eagle sitting near the top of a tree directly above the restroom nestled between the 12th and 15th ladies tee boxes. I got a couple of photos, then it took off in the most gracefull and beautiful soaring motion!!! Unfortunately, my telephoto won't be that great. Hope to see others that will have a closer shot. Would love to get a painting done of our newest resident!

I am so delighted that more and more folks at Alpine are viewing this beautiful raptor.

I sent an e-mail to the WVDNR about my siting of December 21. WVDNR e-mail is Wildlife@wvdnr.gov if you or anyone else would like to advise of recent sitings. Photos would be a great addition to this blog.

Today, Sunday, I saw another rare January site. A beautiful blue heron flew from West Alpine, over my car toward the East side of the lake. I couldn't believe it as it is most unlikely to see this warm weather bird here at this time of the year.

Also, I have become so enamored with the eagle, I've decided to give it a name. What about "Scout", as in "Eagle Scout"?
